George Washington educated himself in geometry and surveying as a young man, and went on his first surveying trip with two, more experienced surveyors in 1748. This was a month long trip in the Blue Ridge mountains. By age 17, George was the county surveyor in Culpeper county, Virginia (Redmond).

The motivation and maturity of young George begs the question of what has happened in our society to change the nature of youth.
